Key Items for a Successful First Day of Volleyball

First, welcome to the greatest sport on Earth! We might be a bit biased but really, we’re glad your athlete is giving volleyball a try!

Now, maybe you, the parent, have never played volleyball in school and you have no idea how to prepare for her first day of volleyball. Don’t worry! You’re at the right page. When young players are just starting out, it’s actually pretty simple. Be sure they are in comfortable, athletic clothing and shoes. Anything they feel comfortable to run, jump, and likely sweat in.

From there, you might want to go ahead and get them some volleyball kneepads. It isn’t crucial when they’re just starting out but they should go ahead and get used to wearing them. Plus, it’s likely that the majority of the other kids will be wearing them as well. There are times when we do ball control drills that call for the kids to take a knee so, in this case, it would be helpful and more comfortable for them. All in all, if you forget them on the first day of your first ever camp or clinic, it’s typically not a deal breaker.

Next, it may be obvious but bring a water bottle! Maybe two. Maybe you don’t know what the water situation is at the facility you are going to so it’s better to bring too much water than not enough. Also, on hot days here in SoCal, water.. is.. everything! One day our water system stopped working in the peak of summer. Thankfully, we had plenty of extra bottles on hand but it’s the perfect example of “you just never know”.

Last but not least, be prepared to have fun! It’s your athlete’s first day trying something new. Us adults should be sure to take any and all pressure off of them. Leave them room to explore their thoughts, emotions, and give them a chance to warm up to the sport on their own. With the right program and coaches, they will open up and do great! It’s just the start, have fun with it!

SUMMARY OF WHAT TO BRING:
